Nitric Oxide (NO) is synthesized in the endothelial cells lining the blood vessels and is then released into the bloodstream. When it binds to the smooth muscle cells surrounding the blood vessels, it causes them to relax and the blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow while thinning the peripheral lining allowing more oxygen to flow to nerves and muscles while simultaneously draining the area of waste products more efficiently.
